Malvern Spring Water

Holywell Malvern Spring Water is the original source of Malvern Water & bottled water in the UK, dating back to 1622. Beautifully presented, unique in taste. Famous for containing nothing at all. The monks at Great Malvern Priory captured the water for the benefit of the town’s elderly and infirm. For centuries afterward, water was bottled at the site and distributed locally until, in 1843, Mr. Schweppes came to town and really commercialized Malvern Water at the Holywell Spring. It was during this period of time that Queen Victoria happened upon Malvern Water at the Great Exhibition, thus ensuring it has been a favorite with the British Royal Family ever since. In the 1850s Malvern Water was bottled by John and William Burrow at the Bottling Works Spring in Robson Ward's yard on Belle Vue Terrace in Great Malvern. The water was bottled and sold at the Great Exhibition in 1851 as Malvern soda water later to become Malvern Seltzer in 1856. Bottling ceased here in the 1950s and the former bottling works are now a selection of shops, coffee house, and kitchen showroom. Water for the Bottling Works Spring is piped from St. Ann’s Well In 1927, Schweppes acquired from the Burrow family, Pewtress Spring in Colwall, on the western side of the Herefordshire Beacon, approximately two miles from Colwall village. In 1929 Schweppes commenced bottling. The factory employed 25 people who bottled 26 million bottles annually. It was operated by Coca-Cola Enterprises Ltd., and the water was sold under the Schweppes brand name. Since the owners, Coca-Cola Enterprises, closed their Coldwall plant in November 2010, Malvern Water is now exclusively bottled on a smaller scale at our original source at Holy Well. Malvern Water has been drunk by several British monarchs. Queen Elizabeth, I drank it in public in the 16th century; in 1558 she accorded John Hornyold, a Catholic bishop and the lord of the manor, the right to use the land under the condition that travelers and pilgrims continue to be able to draw water from the Holy Wellspring. A royal warrant was granted by Princess Mary Adelaide in 1895 and by King George V in 1911. Queen Victoria refused to travel without it and Queen Elizabeth II took it with her whenever she was traveling.
